fearsome oekaki
Fearsome is in Low Power Mode!

What's that mean for you, discerning pixel poker? Most likely, what you see is what you get. Some parts of the site may not be working 100%, and there's a possibility that if it's broken, it might stay that way for a while.

If you can't log in to your account, drop a line. We should be able to reset your user flags.
If you can't get the applet to run, make sure your Java installation is up to date, and make sure you're drawing with ChickenPaint; the other applets are mostly deprecated, and might not successfully post your art (if you can even load them up at all).

When I dream, I can still see her. She's sitting in my studio with the moonlight caressing her skin, humming her favorite song. I tell her that Sarah means princess in Hebrew, and she laughs, because she thinks it's a bit of a silly name for a slave girl to have. I try to tell her I don't think so, but she already knows, and just continues humming, until I wake up, and she is no longer anywhere near me. -Noah

Hi Fearsome long time no see! Just wanted to let you know, Noah and Sarah are both in their late teens early 20's, Noah just has grey hair b/c he fell on his head when he was a toddler, I'm serious. XD That info wa sjust in case anyone was confused. XD;

Hello! I'm trying to learn the tablet better, and find my own style with it. I'm having trouble adjusting from paper, it's troublesome to adjust my hand, on paper I could just move the paper itself. ^-^; I hope this isn't to terrible.
Dolli @ Friday, March 27th 2009, 9:23 AM
"Rule 1
This is not a practice board. You should be proficient with at least one of the available applets."

Not to criticize your drawing or skills, but rules are rules. c:
NyxNova @ Friday, March 27th 2009, 9:45 PM
I never said this was practice. I DID read the rules. I said I NEED more practice, believe me, all my practice crap is in a folder on my desktop. I merely said that in case anyone how anything constructive to add.
Elementalist @ Saturday, March 28th 2009, 6:50 AM
As far as tips for tablets go, maybe you could try drawing on paper first and then tracing it with the tablet? That might help with training your hand. Also, bezier curves, though more of a mouse tool, allows for smoother lines.
red @ Saturday, March 28th 2009, 8:16 AM
avatar
Unplug your mouse, use nothing but your tablet until you're used to it. That's how I did it, anyway.

I like this drawing, it just looks a little unfinished. Maybe try adding a background colour for starters?
Dolli @ Saturday, March 28th 2009, 1:15 PM
Point remains, practice is practice. If you haven't learned yet how to work your tablet then this isn't the place to learn it. There are plenty of other oekaki's and programs to try and get the hang of your tablet before you come here.
reign @ Saturday, March 28th 2009, 8:29 PM
The drawing is fine to me; only thing is that I'd suggest some kind of background? Maybe something similar to the rose vines wrapping around the woman. I really like the style of her face.
reign @ Saturday, March 28th 2009, 8:30 PM
Also Dolli quit being an asshole. :| Nobody has to master the tablet before they can start drawing somewhere. She was asking for constructive criticism.
NyxNova @ Sunday, March 29th 2009, 6:48 AM
Thanks, I also just realized this says it took 2m 18s. No idea where that came from, it took me more like an hour. I really wanted to do more but I am rather inept with computers and all the previous things I've made have gotten lost when I tried to take a break. ^^; I never thought of drawing something first and then tracing it over my pad. I didn't know that my pad would be sensitive enough to pick up the pens movements through paper. Thanks for the tips. I also guess I really should be thinking of how to do backgrounds, they've never been my strong suit.
Gendaru @ Sunday, March 29th 2009, 8:04 AM
avatar
While Dolli's intentions may seem to be true to the rules, they are misguided here. Doctors 'practice' medicine, does that mean they're not good at it yet? The practice rule is there to prevent postings of obvious experimental pictures from people testing the applet functions. Not to keep people from trying new things or using different tools or techniques. Leave it to the moderators (who do still pay attention to the board) to decide what is and what is not in violation of the rules. Confine your comments to constructive criticism if you want to be helpful.

That said, I'd like a background of some kind too, even if it was just a slightly off-white color, to distinguish the figure from the canvas.
apeirophobia @ Sunday, March 29th 2009, 2:42 PM
I love this style! I think a solid color background would tie this all together, especially if it were a rich color. I think it would also bring out the shading on her skin. It would be easy to add, as well, since you've used solid outlines. IMO, even professional artists are still "practicing"; if they weren't, they would have achieved ultimate perfection - and obviously no one's done that.
myuu @ Sunday, March 29th 2009, 4:54 PM
I just wanted to say that I agree an off-white color background would probably add a nice striking effect, especially if you left the skin white like it is. I like the rose bud at the bottom, it's shaped nice.
hclark @ Sunday, March 29th 2009, 4:59 PM
I agree with others over the roses - only thing that kept catching my attention is the lack of emotion in her eyes - (unless it's intentional) =put a little shine on her eyes and her lips and she'll come to life from the binding of the vine of thorns :)
Erie @ Monday, March 30th 2009, 2:05 AM
I kind of like the white, but I am a minimalist. It also reminds me of Snow White, Rose Red. Something eerie in the background, maintaining the grayscale/red combo, would be really neat.
freja @ Monday, March 30th 2009, 2:48 PM
Dolli: The fact remains that she was ACCEPTED to the board, so regardless of whether or not you feel this is "practice", which is such a boatload of crap, it's not your judgment. Stfu until you can get yourself a real account on the board and then go ahead and critize whoever you want for not meeting your standards - which clearly, are the "correct" ones. Art is subjective, just because something doesn't look finished to you, or you disagree with the quality does not mean your opinion is the only opinion, OR the only right one.

Oh my things are getting feisty!

Learning to use a web-tablet is hard, heck I've been doing it for years and I STILL have trouble getting my lines as clean as yours are here. I agree with the others about the bg, perhaps a very light tint of grey or blue?

My favorite part of this is the eyebrows. XD They're so crisp!

Oh my, people get butthurt so easily when someone is simply trying to remain objective.

I never said the drawing was crap. Don't assume things and don't put words in my mouth that I never said. I dare everyone to quote me on where I said her drawing sucked or that she is unskilled. She said this was her first time trying with a tablet which is the only reason I mentioned it under the impression this would count as trial and error and thus violate a rule. I remember an incident in the past where an image was deleted for similar reasons, hence why I brought it up. It may have been a different situation than this though, and so I apologize to the mods and the artist for misinterpreting the rule.

To everyone else, please re-read my comments. I wasn't being an asshole nor did I insult the artwork in question. :) I was trying to be informative as I too am an accepted user on this board and have seen those arguments being used many times before by mods and regular users alike. I simply haven't been around for a while due to real life issues, which may have led to this false interpretation.

Getting personal is so childish too. This is an adult board, if you can't even do as little as sticking to facts and taking internet comments with a grain of salt it might be in order to question if you fit within an adult community.

That said, I wish Nyx good luck with getting the hang of your tablet. It always takes some time to adjust (even I as a nearly decade user of tablets have trouble adjusting to a new tablet). Your best bet is to use the pen for the most trivial things like browsing the internet and playing games with it. You'll find you'll become a lot more familiar and it will be much easier to handle in less time than it takes to solely use it on drawings. ;)
freja @ Wednesday, April 1st 2009, 6:30 PM
I'm sorry if you feel as though I was misinterpreting your words, however, the way you came off in your comments (keep in mind this IS the internet, therefore misinterpretations are common as one cannot hear/see the emotions behind the words, which are a large part of human communication) was snide, and kind of rude. I'm clearly not the only person who thought you were being a little too rude to Nyx.

It severely bothered me that you not only didn't try and offer Nyx any advice about her picture, but instead you followed up other comments with "Practice is practice" which really just perpetuates the image that you were being a dick to her. Personally, it seems like you just took practice too literally here. Yes, it's true that this isn't a practice board, but she obviously has the profficient skills for this not to be deemed 100% practice material.

Anyways, sorry for misinterpreting your words and acting out in anger against your comments, but it just severely bothers me to someone seemingly make a negative comment/criticism against someone without following up with reasons. Perhaps if you had followed up your first comment with the tips for practicing using your tablet, there wouldn't have been a misinterpretation.

I think it's nice. Elegant, simple. I'm not really sure what you could do with the background that would look okay with this. With your simple shading of the figure in flesh tone, any other colour would clash. Maybe if you chose a nice chromatic grey for the background and used a darker shade of it on the figure, that would look okay, and maybe an even darker shade for the lines, keeping the red of the roses and grey of her hair as attractive accents.

But then it would start to turn into something else, and I think it's fine as it is. Getting used to the tablet is just a matter of using it, so I think you're on the right track. I hope you stick around. I'd like to see more of your work here.

I think it looks nice..I like the subtle shading and the red pop of the roses...

Well, she always did have a rather hefty hind quarters! I adore the expression. You always draw her so well, no matter what kind of situation she's in. :p But for old time's sake..*ahem*

This is rockin'. I love your lines, they always make me do a jig. I aspire to lineart like this.

The only thing that strikes me as weird is the hair overlapping her ear not having an outline, since everything else does.

Otherwise, awesome!
