i adore the dynamic between them, the passion (and Passion-style suffering) of the 'worshiper' and the strange blankness of the 'god.' it's not quite a 'blankness' though; it has a grim smile, an odd sort of satisfaction at this worship.

absolutely fantastic.hey, leeches are finally cute!great painting.Yeah, those algorithms are important for the following reason;...(???) Are you going into computer-programming,making programs, ect.?I did art for money, many years ago,and the pay was crappy, plus everyone wanted to do it,it was like trying to become a Rock Star,or a Movie Star. All the artists had "day jobs."I wish I had gone to business school, and done art for myself, because no one appreciated my stuff anyway,or wanted to pay for it.I actually LIKE BUSINESS,but I'm too old to go back to school, start all over. So,yeah, this painting is great, but I'm not sure how many illustrators or painters can make a living off it.Not many.Everyone had a "day job,"or they starved.Maybe the algorithums will help you in computers.

now some rhino facts

1. Rhinos are intelligent, and are trained by their keepers in zoos, using clickers and treats (like dogs and other animals), to become accustomed to routines and handling - and even learn to paint!
2. Rhinos make a variety of sounds and vocalizations, ranging from snorts to squeaks
3. All rhinos have three toes on each foot - they are "three-toed ungulates"
4. Only three Sumatran Rhinos have been born in captivity
5. The Javan Rhino is the most critically endangered mammal on earth - there are less than 60 individuals surviving and none in captivity
6. Rhinos use dung (poop!) to communicate with other rhinos
7. Rhinos wallow in mud to protect their sensitive skin from sunburn and insect bites
8. The rhino's horn is made of keratin (like fingernails and hair)
9. There is no scientific evidence that the rhino horn has any medicinal properties
10. The rhino's horn could be removed without harming the rhino and it will grow back (slowly)
11. The world's rhino population has decreased 90% since 1970 (due to poaching)
Danielle @ Friday, June 25th 2010, 11:18 PM
avatar
12. rhinos do not actually look like this, because if they did, they would definitely be extinct due to looking and probably tasting like marshmallows
bubble @ Sunday, July 4th 2010, 8:39 AM

Those facts are crazy! Other than the mud and keratin facts, I didn't know about the rest. Like the dung, hehe, the intelligence of them, and that the horn can grow back! Though that last one makes sense since it's made of keratin. Rhino would be sad though :( You got one wrong though:

11. The world's rhino population has decreased 90% since 1970 due to TOASTING to make Rhino s'mores.

"As the march wound around Lake Merritt, it turned sharply to the left, a shortcut to BART headquarters. This seems to have thrown off the police, who were clearly unprepared for what came next. A single police car, parked sideways at 8th and Madison to prevent access to the BART headquarters, became the target of the crowd’s increasing fury. Sensing the tone of the crowd, a cop reached in and grabbed her helmet before scurrying away. Within moments, the police car was destroyed and nearly flipped over, and a nearby dumpster was burning.

A few seconds later, the air was thick with teargas. Evidently, seeing their own property destroyed was too much for the police to stomach. I get a noseful of teargas, and a protester near me is shot in the stomach with a rubber bullet, and needs to be helped off, as the crowd quickly sprints north toward downtown. Passing through Chinatown, dumpsters full of fresh produce are emptied into the street to slow the march of a line of riot police."

doreet @ Sunday, August 15th 2010, 2:08 PM

it's a really great painting;Lake Merrit is in Oakland,or Berkely,I think.I know Oakland just had riots, lately, and they called out the troops to mash em.People are all saying"there's going to be huge race riots, and race wars, blacks against white, and civil war in the future of the US."

unfortunately, people who say this are not stupid, they're smart.--good at predicting stuff. So,the future of the US does not look rosy at all.Course,if they did this in Oregon, the white people, civilians, would all get their rifles and handguns out, cause we all own guns here, and you do not even need a license.--not to keep one at home. And now,if someone burglarizes you here, now, since the crime is so bad here, they just shoot the burglar, and kill him, cause the criminal courts are all f____ up. Nobody wants a wounded crip wandering around, out of prison, ready to come back and get you, some night!or,one of his gang.

So,there may be more paintings like this and more photographs, too.Hope not.
CF @ Thursday, August 19th 2010, 1:36 PM
Interesting. I'm white and I spent a lot of time handing out Oscar Grant fliers to people who were mostly working class blacks, yet I didn't run into anybody who was apprehensive about me. In fact, most people expressed they were very excited and relieved to see whites getting involved.
When it came down to the recent, second wave of rebellions you are talking about--where dozens of bank windows and businesses were smashed (and which I attended). I did not feel at any point feel threatened by the people around me. Instead, I felt an electrifying feeling of unity; the feeling of collectively becoming actors within the evolution of a multi-racial social struggle--and also a feeling of great relief because so many people are hungry--starving--for a genuine racial unity.
Nobody talked about it as a "race riot", and I have never heard anybody in Oakland of any race say that's what they want.
On the other hand, there were people I was very wary of at the protest. From the beginning of the event, (well before all the property destruction) as I watched a policeman carelessly back his car into a deaf woman, it was abundantly clear the police were there to "serve and protect" somebody else.
Somebody who wasn't us.
And that's the reason we were all in the streets in the first place, isn't it?

To me, this painting of a photograph represents the evolution of a multi-racial class struggle which--if it got strong enough--could overturn a system which excludes us all.
I hope there are more of them soon.

5th Earth @ Saturday, July 3rd 2010, 8:22 PM
Actually, as a different lurker, I've always taken issues with the black shadow thingy on your faces too. I think in pretty much every other respect you are a fantastic, truly talented artist, but every time I try to reconcile that shadow with any sort of coherent, globally consistent facial geometry and light positioning, it just doesn't work. It's like an MC Escher lighting effect, forcibly drawing attention to the fact that what we are seeing is a fictional 2D medium and thus not constrained by what our brains would expect of 3D reality. Which is good if that's the point, but in your art, I don't think it is.

I usually just tune it out, but if I ever stop and think about it, it makes my head hurt. All the rest of your work has such a wonderful curvacious dimensionality to it, even without the benefits of shading, that my brain just can't cope with the fact that the one overt lighting effect that consistently appears in all your images also, as far as I can tell, violates physics.

But all critiquing aside, OMG hawt. Seriously, I mean like damn.
gd-kun @ Sunday, July 4th 2010, 1:56 PM
avatar
I can appreciate that. Thanks for the polite input! I don't think anyone's ever discussed it with me in such a direct way before. You are also the first person to call me out on the 2D/3D play.

You are correct: there is, in fact, no way to reconcile it in a three-dimensional space. It's completely flat. When I first started doing it, my characters were also a lot flatter, kind of like graffiti-style paper cut-outs, in how they were posed and drawn from frame to frame (heavy influence from Rodney Greenblat at the time). Over the years, I moved to a more "realistic" body style, but found that I liked keeping the heads as they were: these characters can only exist in a two-dimensional space, and I like drawing attention to it. It gets people really riled up sometimes!

A lot of people interpret it as a nose, which I kinda like. I think over time it's been resembling one more and more. I have been toying with the idea of just running with that and saying, "yes, it's a nose," but I'd have to do some clean-up of older comic pages to keep that logic consistent internally.
5th Earth @ Sunday, July 4th 2010, 2:35 PM
Well, it's a load off my mind that you know what you're doing with it. I always suspected part of it was "for tradition's sake" and for consistent styling, but I was never sure how aware you were about how much of a mindfuck it actually was. Looking back at your older work, I see what you mean about the flatter graffiti-like style, and in those older images the shadow *is* a lot less striking, for me at least. There's less cognitive dissonance, because my expectations are already biased towards unrealistic 2-dimensionality.

Anyway, I squee for postmodernism and love drawing attention to the media and screwing with people's assumptions. I have much more appreciation for the shadow now that I know you're aware of what it's doing on a conceptual level.
