what you can do is mask the black and then erase everything, should clear the white and teal leaving only the black and clear, to show the layers below through. at least that's what i used to do back in the day, cant remember if it was via paintbbs or shipainter though. worth a try? this is badass, and i'd love to see it finished. :D
